Active Directory Reports

I'm not sure this is an actual reporting services question but has someone else created reports for active directory in Reporting Services

I want to create a report with users and their respective manager. I have this working in reporting services but I just want the manager name how could I strip out all the other information in the manager field?

SELECT personalTitle, manager, name, employeeid, distinguishedName
FROM 'LDAP://dc=xxx,dc=xxx,dc=xxxt'
WHERE objectClass = 'user' AND objectCategory = 'Person'
ORDER BY name

I get this as the manager name, I just want his name

CN=Smith\, Kurt,OU=Financial,OU=DataControl,OU=Users-Groups,DC=xxx,DC=xxx,DC=xxx

Thank you,

There should an AD property that gives you the name as entered. As a last resort, you can call a custom function to parse the name, e.g.

= Code.MyFunction(Field!name.Value)

|||

Hi thank you, I had tried a function in the bids tool by calculating a new member using this

=Mid(Fields!manager.Value,4,(InStr(Fields!manager.Value,",OU=")-4)) and this works fine on my desk top but when I attemtp to deploy it I get an error

Warning 1 [rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the field ‘ManagerName’ contains an error: Argument 'Length' must be greater or equal to zero. C:\mydocs\SQL Server Management Studio\Projects\Active Directory\Active Directory\Active Dir Manager Report.rdl 0 0
Managername is my new calculated column

|||Could you prepare and send a sample report that demonstrates the issue? You can hardcode the dataset if you wish, e.g. using SELECT...UNION.|||

Thank you for the response. It was a data issue with the manager, some of my manager names were blank I had to search for them and replace with values prior to using the other functions: in case your interested first I use IIF

I put in the same values as I plan to strip off with the next calculated member

new field LookforNoManager

=IIF(Fields!manager.Value Is Nothing,"CN=Not Available,OU=",Fields!manager.Value)

then I created this new ManagerName

=Mid(Fields!LookForNoManager.Value,4,(InStr(Fields!LookForNoManager.Value,",OU=")-4))

one way around it I guess.

Now after I upload them I can't connect to the either the OLE DB active directory datasource directly or my linkserver ADSI datasource from the webserver? is there any trick to this definition

Here is my connection string for the linkedserver

Provider=ADsDSOObject;Data Source=lifeeai602\devsqlservices

here is my connecting sting when I tried to define the datasource directly to active directory

Provider=ADsDSOObject

Do I need to change something to point to LDAP?

|||Not sure how you connect. If it works in VS.NET but it doesn't on the server it is probably security. What credentials do you specify on the data source and what provider do you use?|||

I use windows integrated security in the development tool and I set that up on the server to access the datasource as well, here is part of the error from the RS logfile

Active Data - binding recordset not working

I have converted some reports to read TTX files (from OLEBD), and then changed the 'runReport' page to discard data, and 'setprivate' data (see below). This works beautifully in the test enviroment, but not on our production servers (windows 2000). Its Crystal 8 on all servers.

If any one has any idea... or needs me th explain in more detail... your help would be appreciated!!!How did you run on production?
Did you create set up and installed there?|||Yes - I copied over the TTX files, the associated report files, and the modified ASP pages to the live web servers. By the way, here is the code used on the ASP pages that binf the active data to the report:

rs.Open "SELECT * from table1",cn,adOpenForwardOnly

set session("oRs")=rs

'Attach to report file, and then reassign data from recordset to it
Set Database = session("oRpt").Database
set Tables = Database.Tables
set Table1 = Tables.Item(1)

session("oRpt").DiscardSavedData
Table1.SetDataSource session("oRs")

Action jumping to wrong report

Hello all,
I have a set of master reports that have linked copies in different
directories based on which customer is logging in to view them. Many of
the fields in these reports have actions to jump to other reports. The
problem I'm running into is that the action is jumping to the report in
the master directory (which has open customer queries) instead of the
one in the customer directory which has a default.
Kind of confusing, so here's an example:
Master reports 1 and 2 in directory /master have a default value of %
for customer and don't prompt for that parameter
Linked reports 1 and 2 in directory /123 have a default value of 123
for customer and don't prompt for that parameter
Report 1 jumps to report 2 when they click on a certain field, but if
it jumps to the report in /master it will query data for all customers.
I want it to jump to the linked report in /123 so it will only query
data for that customer.
If I try to pass in the customer field it gives an error since that
field isn't prompted for. Obviously prompting for the field will defeat
the security. Is there any way to force it to jump to the linked report
in the current directory instead of the one in the directory being
linked from?
Thanks!
JonAfter playing around with the "jump to URL" option I answered my own
question.
=Globals!ReportServerUrl & "?" & Globals.ReportFolder &
"/Report+2&Customer=" Fields!customer.value
Just in case it helps anyone else with a similar question...
Thanks,
Jon

Acrobat Reader print error

I have a couple of Reporting Services reports that I render to PDF and open
them in Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.1 for viewing/printing. When I try to print
either report, I get the following popup error message:
The instruction at "0x77f580db" referenced memory at "0x013997c4". The
memory could not be "written".
Upon clicking 'OK' in the popup, Acrobat closes and nothing prints. This
error message occurs on every machine in the company running Adobe Acrobat
Reader 5.0.1. Upgrading to a later version is not an option at this point.
As a control test, I opened a non-Reporting Services created PDF and was
able to successfully print. So, it appears that the error is related to how
Reporting Services renders the PDF.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
BobKIm just taking a stab in the dark here but do you think the problem could
possibly be that you are using some type of a font that the export does not
support?
It is my understanding that SRS does not embed fonts into PDF but I am not
sure if this throws an error or if it simply defaults to something generic
such as 'ARIAL'.
Not sure..but something to consider.

Accessing two databases simultaneously

I have Crystal Reports 8.5 installed at my site. Was looking at accessing data from 2 databases(Oracle & SQL Server 2000) simultaneously, i.e creating a report which would simultaneously access these 2 data sources. Can you tell me the possibility of doing this.
Thanks. You can make your report connect to SQL Server only..and retrieve Oracle data from SQL Server as a linked server..
this article can give you an idea about this:
How to Link Different Data Sources Together (http://www.dev-archive.com/Csharp/Csharp/cs_data/searching/article.php/c9953/)|||Hi,

I think we need to use Business Views this future is available in Crystal Reports10.
I don't think by using Crystal Reports 8.5 we can achive this...

Accessing the underlying sql query from the rdl file

Our client uses the report builder to generate reports for collection of employees. We would like to use the employee records in this report to perform some additional processing (such as the list of employees gets assigned to a particular group).

Programmatically, I can retrieve a byte stream from rs.GetReportDefinition( "\myClientEmpReport") and deserialize the stream into Report object (as define by ReportDefinition.xsd).

I can then manually drill down and retrieve the SematicQuery xml from the commandText field.

The problem is how to convert the SemanticQuery format into a T-Sql query that I can run against the view that the report model is based off of.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Arjay

P.S. Running SQL 2005 Reporting Services, VC# 2005, ASP.Net 2.0.

After attempting to autogenerate serialization classes on the SemanticQuery xml with Xsd and XsdObjectGen, I ended up hand coding some classes that handled recursion. From there, I was able to regenerate the sql query by walking through the filter and grouping sections. While this isn't a generic solution, it works well for my needs because the model I need this for is a single datasource derived from a view.

As a feature request, it sure would be nice to be able get the query string from the reporting engine directly.

Accessing SQL Server database from Crystal Reports - being prompted to log on every time?

Hello, this is my first time posting here.
I've never really worked with SQL Server much, but I'm in the process of learning. Please forgive my ignorance.
Anyways, here's my dilemma.
A user at the office uses Crystal Reports (I'm not too familiar with this program either). Crystal Reports pulls data from SQL Server. However, every single time it does so, it prompts her to log into the database.
While there is no serious problem, this has gotten very annoying. She wants to be able to work without being prompted to log on to the database every single time Crystal Reports retrieves data.
How would I go about doing this? The office has no real security issues, so I'm open to "less-than-perfectly-secure" options as well.

I assume that by the log on prompt, you mean a request to enter a password. If that's the case, then your database application is using SQL Authentication. If Crystal Reports does not provide a "remember the password" option, you have to re-enter it each time. If you could use Windows Authentication, the need for entering a password would go away, but this would require changing the application.

Thanks
Laurentiu

Accessing Reports/Databases across 2 domains

I have architecture related question -
I have 2 databases on 2 domains and security doesn't permit me to co-mingle
the data. I'll be generating 2 different reports for same request.
Question is - Do I need SQL server with reporting services installed on
each domain?
Current proposed solution is -
Domain AAA will have SQL server with RSS
Domain BBB will have SQL server with RSS
Sharepoint web parts (on BBB side) will access report from AAA and BBB.
(Domain BBB has 1 port open to allow web traffic).
If trusted SQL server connection is made available to RSS on BBB side, then
I think we don't need server with RSS on domain AAA. is this right? If so,
How can I access databases from RSS across domains?
Sounds interesing right? Please help me ....Sonali,
RSS is only needed to host the report definition which in turn collects
the data required. Provided the data connections are set up with
appropriate logins to the databases on each domain from the RS server,
you should be able to run from one RS server.
Your issue will be if your security policies totally prevent any access
between the domains.

There are three options for integrating Reporting Services into custom
applications: the Report Server Web service, also known as the
Reporting Services SOAP API, the ReportViewer controls for Visual
Studio 2005 and URL access. Each option provides a different approach
for integrating Reporting Services into your applications.
For Detail Refer http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms153697.aspx|||Amit mentions the different ways to integrate with SSRS but you have an
additional requirement of the user only using this through your report. I
think the only way to do this is via forms authentication. This allows you
to control access. Next you would need to use webservices.

Accessing reports through URL

Hello, All !!

I'm now getting problems with access reports through URL.
The situation is:
I'm posting the form to the frame, action attribute's URL includes
querystring.
Also I have some inputs in the form.
I'm using method=post.

Problem is that Report Server ignores parameters from query of the action.

I think it should work with them but it doesn't.

If anyone knows what's the matter here, please !

Thank you,
Alexander Yaremchuk

What version of the SQL RS are you using. The latest SQL 2005 CTP drop had this bug, which has been fixed since then.
Thanks
Tudor

Accessing Reports through Internet

Hi,
is it possible to put a Report Server on a computer inside a DMZ and the
SQL-Server 2005 in the secure area?
For simplicity we want to use two or three local windows-system accounts to
log in through a web browser to the Report Manager (authentication via IIS
on the computer with the ReportServer). Then we want the reports to use
datasources behind the firewall with stored
credentials. Is this scenario possible? Are there any drawbacks?Did you able to make this architecture work? I am also having the same
situation.

As indicated by MS, this should works. But practical speaking, you'll face
at least 2 no go issues:
1. Your window credential will not be authenticated as the RS server in DMZ,
which means RS server and user are not in same domain and they don't trusted
each other.
2. The RS server can't be setup. RS server in DMZ, and SQL in secure zone
means they're in different domain. They will not trust each other thus not
way you can run the setup.

Accessing Reports through a web application?

Hi All,

I have developed few reports in SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services and deployed them on a reporting server.

These reports are accessed through a web application that is deployed on a different server. I am using the Report Viewer control in my web application.

The problem is when I access the reports through my web application, it gives me a Page not found error.

If I have both web server and reporting server on the same machine, then this problem does not come.

I need to have separate web and reporting server. Can anyone please provide help on how to solve this authentication issue. My web application is taking the credentials but the credentials are not getting passed if the reports are deployed on a different server.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Has anyone tried this before?

Regards!!!

accessing reports securely through ASP

Hej
I'm new to Reporting Services. I'm using RS 2005, ASP 2.0 and VS 2003.
I've created the reports and have been using a URL link in my ASP site to
ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fFOLDER%2fREPORT for viewing the
reports. When the reports are accessed outside the server, the browser
requires username and password. This isn't desired.
Whats the best way to handle this? If I switch to VS 2005 does the
ReportViewer control handle this? Is it possible/safe to change the user
rights for ReportViewer.aspx? Its important not to allow users access to the
Report Manager, but can the rights to viewing individual reports be handled
through there?
I appreciate any advise on the matter. On Mar 14, 2:27 pm, jknurek <jknu...@.discussions.microsoft.com> wrote:

I believe that there is a way to control (minimally) access to reports
in the Report Manager interface (check the top right-hand side of the
main page). Also you can control user access through the application
(as far as, not showing the user a link to the Report Server, etc).
Sometimes the login is required when the user accesses the Report
Server from Mozilla or Firefox (whereas, w/Internet WExplorer, it may
not happen). Also, you can check the Directory Security for the
Reports and Report Server Virtual Directories in IIS to check for
Windows Authentication, anonymous access, etc (via right-clicking My
Computer, select 'Manage' and go to Services and Applications ->
Internet Information Services -> Web Sites -> Default Web and right-
clicking the Reports or ReportServer Virtual Directory and selecting
Properties and the 'Directory Security' tab). Hope this helps.

Accessing Reports Once Deployed?

I have created several reports in SRS and I deploy them by establishing a VPN connection than deploying. That much works fine.

Now I want to allow user of my website to access the reports by clicking on a link. Do I need to establish user level access for the reports for each user or just one public access account? How do I pass login and credential information with the link so that users can access the report.

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

Reporting Services uses AD out of the box. You can add individual user accounts or groups to the Report Manager as browsers or content managers.

If you are using SOAP access you can pass the credentials in from code, otherwise they'll have to type their info in.

If you want to use forms based or custom security, it is a bit complex but can be done.

Here's a link to more info.

Can any one tell me how to do this.

If you can put in what the error is and what type of servers you are running from then we can try and help!

Is your SQL seperate?

Did you enter //servername/reports and try and add it in here?

Have you set up permission to access the server!?

Hey i got the solution.....

First thing is ur Server has to be on domain and not a workgroup computer.

Second thing is you will have to give acess rights to the users u want to see the reports.

Accessing reports from a ASP.NET 2.0 web site

Though I would beleive it to not be an issue I thought I would bounce this
off the group.
We are looking at deploying a web site that will be created under 2.0
Framework. Resources such as SQL Server Reporting Services and SMS are still
under the 1.1 Framework. I would think that this wouldn't be an issue since
the connections established between these resrouces will be outside the
bounds of the different frameworks.
Is there a problem that I'm no seeing with this deployment picture?
Ken...Let me make sure this is clear.
The relationship that I am facing would have a 2.0 Framework web server
sitting on one web server, 1.1 framework on the SMS and SQL Server Reporting
Services server.

I'm sure its workable. RS exposes a web service and ASP.NET2 certainly
has ways of consuming a web service although I'm not sure if the
ASP.NET viewer control can talk to the old RS.
If its a public web site then you better hope that your visitors are
using Internet Explorer. RS is almost useless in FireFox. I don't know
about other non IE browsers. At least that's my experience, even with
2005. I'm curious to hear if anyone is having better luck than me.|||This is inside our network and yes, all IE browsers. I didn't think it would
be a problem but who ever knows what's going to bite ya.

Accessing Reports

My host provides access to Report Manager and Report Server with the same
login and password for my SQL Server. For obvious security reasons, I do
not want to pass these out to my client to access their reports. My host
has mentioned consuming the report and using the "credentials" properties to
pass the login info to the Report Server.
I have not learned enough about .NET to understand how to do this, as I am
still use classic ASP for many applications, so this is Greek to me. I was
hoping
this would be easy to do and if someone could point me in the right
direction.
Thanks so much,
BrianWhat your host is suggesting is very difficult to do. It requires creating
a separate web page that gets a report using SOAP and streams back the
report HTML (and, separately, the images, because the browser will ask for
them separately).
Direct URL access to the ReportServer is the easiest way to handle it, and
yes, it's a good idea to have a different user name and password for that
operation.

but I suppose my host is assuming that everyone is a .NET developer and could
do this with ease.
Thanks,
Brian

Accessing Reporting Services Reports from Mac

Hi all.
Using a MacMini to access a Reporting Services 2000 installation and getting
some very strange results.
When using Safari I can browse the folders of the server, and can see the
reports, but they will not render at all.
In IE, I can render the reports but encounter missing entries in my
parameterised drop downs, and cannot seem to export to any format, PDF/Excel
etc.
Anyone come across this behaviour before, and know if it's 'by design' or
avoidable at all?
Many thanks,
Paul.I have not heard of very much success at all with using MACs with RS2000. It
might be better with RS 2005 but I don't know.

Hi Paul!
I'm not familiar with Reporting Services. Does it require ActiveX? If
so, this is Windows only and won't work with any browser on a Mac.
If it doesn't require ActiveX, try a different web browser such as
Firefox. Firefox uses a different rendering engine than Safari and we
have found we're able to access more Windows-centric sites with it. As
for IE for Mac, that was discontinued a few years ago and was finally
pulled off Microsoft's website earlier this year.
Hope this helps! bill
