Active/Active Clustering

I am new to clustering and I did found lot of information on internet using google. Only Q I have is, do I have to do Clustering at Windows 2000 (OS level) before I can do it at SQL Server 2000 level.
ThanxYes, you must cluster Windows before it makes any sense to try to cluster the application(s) that run on them.

Accessing shares over internet

I have a remote client accessing a SQL database via an internet connection to
a public IP address on our SQL server. THe program needs to access a shared
folder for printing reports in the program, but the client does not recognize
the UNC path to the folder because they are not on the network. How can I
get around this? LMHOSTS?
TIA,
S. Thompson
Hi
\\ipaddress\sharename does work over the internet, as long as the correct
ports are opened to allow Kerberos or NT Challenge/Response authentication.
If you do, you are asking to get hacked. I would not recommend doing this.
Is there not another printing solution you can use?

|||No, there doesnt seem to be another solution. Would I use an LMHOST entry
for that?

Accessing Reports through Internet

Hi,
is it possible to put a Report Server on a computer inside a DMZ and the
SQL-Server 2005 in the secure area?
For simplicity we want to use two or three local windows-system accounts to
log in through a web browser to the Report Manager (authentication via IIS
on the computer with the ReportServer). Then we want the reports to use
datasources behind the firewall with stored
credentials. Is this scenario possible? Are there any drawbacks?Did you able to make this architecture work? I am also having the same
situation.

As indicated by MS, this should works. But practical speaking, you'll face
at least 2 no go issues:
1. Your window credential will not be authenticated as the RS server in DMZ,
which means RS server and user are not in same domain and they don't trusted
each other.
2. The RS server can't be setup. RS server in DMZ, and SQL in secure zone
means they're in different domain. They will not trust each other thus not
way you can run the setup.

accessing remote sql server 2000 ( enterprise manager like tool)

Hi all,

I need to gain access to a remote SQL Server 2000 storing my data.
The remote SQL machine can only be accessed via an internet connection,
that is - it is not part of my network.

I know Enterprise Manager can do the job, but EM only comes bundled in
MS SQL Server, which is not installed on the client machine.

Please let me know which other (preferably free) tools can perform
such remote access.

Thanks,

In theory anything that can attach to a database, VB MS-Access Fxopro
etc etc. More of a problem would be is the database directly
accessible from the internet at all? I would have thought this was a
very bad idea.

accessing MSDE over the internet

Hi!
I was wondering if it was possible to access a MSDE server through the
internet and if it is what settings have to be made on the server machine.
I would like this so I could make any required repairs of my application
over the internet...
Thanks,
sasoSaso,
The MSDE Database work fine if u have less than 15 concurrent users and the
Database maximum file is 1GB. You don't need do any special configuration to
MSDE work through internet, but the performance will be poor.

to your friend and he can't connet to it. Here are things you should look
at:
1. your MSDE must use TCP/IP in net library.
2. you must know, and should change the default SQL port number 1433.
3. if you have a router you must have the router routes traffic on SQL port
to your MSDE box.
With a proper setup of your router and IP + port number given to your friend
he (she) can connect to SQL

It also depends upon the version you have installed. At the SP3a level, MSDE
installs with network protocols disabled. Run the server network utility
SRVNETCN.exe to correct that.
